DESCRIPTION

The Bohr model of the atom describes how the chemical properties of an element are related to the arrangement of its electrons in shells around a central nucleus. An understanding of this model is required knowledge in most High School Science courses.

The Periodic Table of the Elements is a representation of the elements that groups them into columns with similar chemical characteristics.

This application brings together these two fundamental scientific models in a simple visual experience that you can interact with to explore how atomic structure is related to the chemistry of the elements.

HOW IT WORKS

The application displays a selected element floating above its position in the Periodic Table. The elements are color coded according to their categories. Alongside the table is a diagram showing the electron shells for the selected element. Use the elements button to display an alphabetical list of the names of the elements.

You can select a new element by tapping on its cell in the Periodic Table. Press and drag the selector to scan across a Period or up and down within a Group. Use the slider to scan through the elements in atomic number order. Use these navigation gestures to reinforce your understanding of how electron configuration is related to the chemical characteristics of an element.
